CLIMADAT-hub is a two year project (2024-2026) led by the National Observatory of Athens. The project is implemented in the framework of H.F.R.I call “Basic research Financing (Horizontal support of all Sciences)” under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
High resolution climate information on both seasonal and long-term timescales is an essential component of a country’s comprehensive framework for responding to the risks of climate change and for the implementation of its adaptation policy and strategies.
CLIMADAT-hub bridges the gap between the climatic information available and the information needed for assessing climate risks at the local scale, by developing high resolution observational gridded datasets and statistically downscaled seasonal forecasts and climate change projections that cover the entirety of Greece.

The availability of climate projections on high spatio-temporal resolution is necessary to assess regional climate change signals and their impact over the complex topographical area of Greece, thus contributing to national adaptation policies. The lack of local high-resolution seasonal forecast predictions and long-term climate change projections prohibits the assessment of risks and vulnerabilities and the effective development of local adaptation measures. However, the available state-of-the-art seasonal forecasting systems (i.e. Copernicus C3S seasonal forecasting systems) and climate change modelling experiments (i.e. CMIP6) have horizontal resolutions of about 100 km, which is insufficient for supporting adaptation planning and decision-making at the local and regional scales.
