Large wetland fires in springtime are a severe risk to the nesting sites of globally important waterbird populations. Wetland fires destroy nests during the breeding season, causing the population to plummet and putting species at risk.

SPP consistently monitors spring fires and provides information on the location of waterbird colonies in order to prevent their destruction by uncontrolled fires in the wetland.
